#8 Children Tell Their Own Stories / Los niños cuentan sus propias historias

As much as children enjoy listening to stories, they also like to tell their own stories! Sometimes, they are excited to talk about important or interesting events in their lives. Conversations about what happened during the day can become enthusiastic retellings of special activities at school or playing favorite games with their friends. Ask questions, such as, “What did you enjoy doing today? Please tell me about it!” Those comments could prompt children to share their ideas with someone ready to listen.

At other times, children’s imaginations lead them to create their own fictional stories. The children might become important characters with amazing adventures in their own make-believe stories! Family and friends could be supporting characters in those stories. Help their imaginations by asking “What if…” questions. For example: What if that flower grew taller than a tree? What could happen?

Whether children retell real events in their lives or create make-believe stories, encourage them to draw pictures about their ideas. The pictures are another way for children to express and record their thoughts. The pictures also remind children about their ideas. Telling stories with pictures help children understand how pictures and words work together in stories!

¡Tanto como los niños disfrutan escuchando historias, también les gusta contar sus propias historias! A veces, se emocionan para hablar de acontecimientos importantes o interesantes en sus vidas. Las conversaciones sobre lo que sucedió durante el día pueden convertirse en relatos entusiastas de actividades especiales en la escuela o jugar juegos favoritos con sus amigos.
